Grant Policy & Guidelines
Grant Availability
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
- Grants are awarded subject to available funding.
- The maximum grant amount is $5,000 per household per pet per cancer diagnosis.
- Koda's Legacy Foundation reserves the right to award lesser amounts based on demonstrated need and available funds.
Eligibility Requirements

Reside in the state of Washington

Provide documentation of a confirmed cancer diagnosis from a licensed veterinarian or oncologist.

Provide a written treatment estimate from the treating veterinary provider.

Demonstrate financial hardship related to the cost of treatment.

Be actively pursuing cancer treatment or palliative care at the time of application.
Financial Hardship Standard
Financial hardship may include significant financial strain relative to household income, savings, debt, insurance gaps, or other financial obligations. Financial hardship will be evaluated holistically and not based solely on income level.
- Self-reported household income range
- Disclosure of pet insurance (if applicable)
- A brief written explanation describing how treatment costs create financial strain
Eligible Expenses
Grant funds may be applied toward evidence-based veterinary oncology treatment intended to extend life, improve comfort, or preserve quality of life. All treatment must be recommended and overseen by a licensed veterinarian. When reasonably accessible, consultation with a board-certified veterinary oncologist is encouraged but not required. Eligible expenses include:
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Surgical tumor removal
- Oncology-related hospitalization
- Treatment-related medications
- Pain management and supportive palliative care
Ineligible Expenses
- Routine diagnostic testing performed prior to treatment planning
- General wellness exams
- Non-cancer-related medical care
- Experimental or unproven alternative treatments
- Pet insurance premiums
- Reimbursement for previously paid expenses
- Non-medical expenses (travel, lodging, food, etc.)
Payment of Funds
- All approved grant funds will be paid directly to the treating veterinary provider.
- Funds will not be disbursed directly to applicants.
- Payment will be issued only after approval.
Review & Approval Process
Once you submit your application our team will review it as quickly as possible. Due to the nature of cancer treatment our goal is to have application reviewed within 5 business days. A determination letter will be emailed to you.

Koda’s Legacy Foundation provides financial grants to assist with veterinary care but does not provide medical advice, veterinary services, or treatment. All medical decisions regarding an animal’s care are the responsibility of the pet owner and their licensed veterinarian. The Foundation shall not be responsible for medical outcomes, treatment decisions, or veterinary services provided.
